HOME READING INFORMATION

Our books will are graded by levels known as book bands.  This means that when you know your child’s book band, you will be able to support them to select books from different reading schemes with confidence, knowing that they are the right level for your child.  

Here are the colours:

Pink level - Your child will be getting used to reading from left to right and matching spoken words to written words. These books will usually have no more than 10 pages with up to 5 words on a page.

 Red level – Your child will have gained a little more confidence and may know some high frequency words by sight. These books will usually have no more than 15 pages with 1 sentence per page.

Yellow level - Your child will be beginning to read more varied sentence structures and taking some note of punctuation.  These books usually have no more than 15 pages with 1 or 2 sentences per page.

 Blue level – Your child will be becoming more confident at reading longer and more varied sentences.  These books will usually have no more than 15 pages with 2 or 3 sentences per page.

 Green level – You child is starting to read quite fluently and will take note of punctuation e.g. pausing at full stops.  These books usually have about 20 pages with 3 or 4 sentences per page.

 Orange level – Your child is starting to read longer and more complex sentences and can understand a range of punctuation, e.g. exclamation marks and question marks. These books usually have about 20 pages with 4 or 5 sentences per page.

Turquoise level – Your child can read complex sentences fairly fluently, taking note of punctuation, e.g. speech marks.  They use expression and do not rely on illustrations to help them. These books usually have about 20 pages with 4 or 5 sentences per page.

 Purple level – Your child might read silently or quietly at quite a rapid pace, taking note of punctuation.  These books usually have about 25 pages with 5 to 10 sentences per page.

 Gold level – Your child will often read silently or quietly at quite a rapid pace, taking note of punctuation.  These books usually have about 25 pages with 5 to 10 sentences per page.

 White level – These books might have chapters. Your child will read silently most of the time.  They are interested in longer texts which they can return to easily after a break.

Lime level books – These books often have chapters.  Your child will read silently most of the time.  They are interested in longer texts which they can return to easily after a break.  These books usually have more than 30 pages.

Don’t forget that all children will progress through the book bands at different rates. 

Your child’s class teacher will write in his/her home record book to inform you which book band level he/she is on but if you have any questions please ask.
