Our School Governors

The Governing Board is committed to doing all that it can to ensure that children here get the very best.

Our Governors work closely with our staff, take an active interest in the school and visit regularly during the school day to see us “in action”.

They meet at least six times a year to review, plan and discuss all aspects of school management and to ensure that a high standard of education is provided for all.

Governors are often referred to as “critical friends”, and our role is to support and question on all aspects of school life. We are involved in recruiting staff when the need arises.
We also keep an eye on the school budget, the state of the building, and attendance & welfare as well as, most importantly, the curriculum. We work together as a team, sharing the load by dividing into small committees and coming together at regular Full Governing Board meetings.

Governing Boards represent all parts of the community: Parents, Teachers and Support Staff, Community Governors who represent local organisations and businesses, and some are appointed by the Childrens’ Services Department. We are all volunteers, but it is very satisfying to know that we are doing something worthwhile for the children.

Usually Governors are asked to sign up for four years, which means that we are on the lookout for new Governors from time to time. We advertise, when new parent governors are needed, in the school newsletter and have an election. The teachers and staff have their own election.

You are welcome to contact any member of the Governing Body through the Clerk to Governors, Mrs Katherine Cotton, via the school address. Our current Chair of Governors is Mr Anthony Mayo.

Our Governing Board meets altogether at Full Governing Board Meetings 3 times a year and then all governors also sit on our Curriculum Full Board meeting which also meets 3 times a year. We have two sub committees of around six governors which also meet 3 times per year, these are Premises, and Finance and Personnel.

Mr Anthony Mayo Chairs our Full Governing Board.

Mr Stuart Ford Chairs the Premises Committee and is also our LA Governor

Ms Elizabeth Harris Chairs our Finance and Personnel Committee.

Miss Lyn White and Mrs Emma Chaplin Chair our Curriculum Committee.

We do not have any associate governors at present and have 13 members of the governing board including the Headteacher.

Our clerk to the Governors is Mrs Katherine Cotton and she can be contacted on clerk@harbour.e-sussex.sch.u

Mr Anthony Mayo

Chair of Governors / Parent Governor /SEN Governor

In Feb 2015 I joined the Governing Board as a parent governor.  I am Chair of Governors and the link governor for SEN, mental health, pupil premium and attendance.

I am a firm believer that all children are entitled to the best education in order to improve their future life choices.

My children have enjoyed their time at Harbour Primary and Nursery School.  They have developed friendships and taken advantage of the after school clubs and sports activities.

Mr Stuart Ford

Co-opted Governor /LA Governor

I’ve been a Governor at Harbour (and previously Southdown) for over 12 years and all three of my children have attended the school. My current role is as Vice Chairman of the Governing body and I am also the Chair of the Premises Committee.

I have been actively involved with the school over this time including attending meetings, visits into the school and participating in the Year 6 camp for 5 years!  I am also a Governor at Seahaven Academy and hold a role on the East Sussex Governor Representative Group which supports Governing Bodies of other schools around the county. I enjoy the challenges of this role and look forward to continue contributing to the school in the future.

Rev Martin Miller

Co-opted Governor

I have been a community governor at Harbour (and previously Gray’s) for about ten years.  Before that I was a governor of a primary school in Bermondsey, South-East London for 5 years.  I am Vicar of St Michael’s Church just over the road from school and have taken assemblies, and do governor visits.

We enjoy hosting Harbour pupils and their families at St Michael's for R.E. visits, Christingle services, Monday Messy Church and other activities. No school is ever perfect, but Harbour is one of the best and it’s a privilege to be a governor here and to see what a great start our children get in so many ways!

Mrs Gina Bickerstaff

Parent Governor

I am currently the Chair of Harbour PTA and enjoy organising many events that are held at the school in order to raise much needed funds. I am very passionate about the events that are organised and am thrilled when I see the children, parents, carers and staff enjoying these also.

I currently work for Adult Social Care within a re-enablement team, where I too, enjoy seeing people regain or maintain their independence. I have a daughter in year 3 at Harbour and many family members also have children within the school.

Mrs Liz Geering

Co-opted Governor

I have worked in education for 12 years, firstly at Chyngton Primary School in Seaford where my 2 children now attend.

I started working at Harbour Primary 5 years ago as an INA, then a TA, and now as a TA3 in year 1.  I am also a Thrive Practitioner, working with individuals and small groups twice a week.

In my spare time I am currently studying for the second year of a Primary Education Degree, and enjoy spending time with my children who are now in year 4 and 6.

Mr Mel Voice

Co-Opted Governor

My name is Mel Voice and I am a Governor at Harbour Primary and Nursery School.

I was previously the Premises Manager at our school for 6 years between 2011 and 2017, therefore I know the school very well. I retired from my post in 2017 but still on occasion help out with Caretaker cover if needed.

I am currently chair of the Premises committee and also act as the PE Governor. I like to be involved with as much PE as possible, especially helping out with transport to get the pupils to various tournaments. Our school enters as many competitions as possible across a wide range of sports.

Two of my grandchildren progressed through the school and have moved on to Secondary Education. I currently have three more grandchildren in our school, from Nursery to Year 5.

Mrs Jenny Flood

Co-opted Governor

I am very excited to have been asked to be a community governor of Harbour Primary.

I have been a friend, first of Grays and then Harbour, since my son started school at Grays.

I have enjoyed working with the children, listening to them read and more recently working with them on topics around our town's history.

I am a trustee of Newhaven Historical Society and recently completed my history doctorate at the University of Sussex. I have worked on a number of Arts Council and heritage projects promoting Newhaven's history.

I am really looking forward to working with the other governors and staff and hope I can do justice to the role.

Ms Elizabeth Harris

Parent Governor

I have been a volunteer at Harbour Primary since my son started in reception 4 years ago. Twice a week I help with a range of activities such as art and craft and guided reading.

I love being able to play a small role in the children’s fantastic learning journey. I am very passionate about providing high quality, well-rounded education for our children which is why I volunteer and why I wanted to be a Parent Governor.

I became a Parent Governor in June 2016 and I am a member of the Finance and Personnel committee. As well as attending Governor meetings I undertake observations during the school day. Through these governor observations I am able to provide an objective report on the quality of the curriculum and teaching in our school.

When I am not at school I am working full time as a Healthcare Assistant Educator at the local Hospital Trust.

Mrs Elizabeth Jackson

Staff Governor

I have worked at Grays and consequently Harbour for around 13 years and have taught across all Key Stages, including Early Years. I have worked with many of the current staff and have enjoyed the experience very much, learning a lot along the way! Before working here I taught as a supply teacher in a number of schools around the county.  This has given me a good insight into how other schools operate. Before that I taught in London where I was a teacher governor for several years and know the value of a good teacher voice on the board of governors.

Being a parent of children/young adults gives me thoughts and opinions around education that I also consider very valuable. I would like to think I have good listening skills and make good observations about school, life and our profession.  I am delighted to represent you all as a teacher governor.

Dr Tony Bradbury

Community Governor

I have been a community governor at our school since September 2018. I was previously a Governor here when the school was named Southdown school, and have also been a governor at Breakwater academy and at Seahaven academy, for a total overall of about twenty years. My late wife was also one of our governors.

My children have all grown and flown the nest, but I have a grandson still a pupil at our school.

I worked as a general practitioner in Newhaven for about 37 years, having retired six years ago. I am a member of several local clubs and organisations, and am presently an elected member of Newhaven Town Council.

Lyn White

Co-opted Governor and Headteacher

Emma Chaplin

Co-opted Governor and Deputy Head

I started working at Grays School, now Harbour Primary, in September 2000 having previously work at the Nursery in 1997 so have been part of the Newhaven community for 24 years.

I am the Deputy Head and Inclusion Manager and am passionate about ensuring our children's social and emotional needs and their well-being is at the heart of everything we do. I have taught across Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 but my in-depth experience is within Early Years and Key Stage 1.

I believe the teaching of reading is fundamental and want to support all children to develop a love of books.

At Harbour we are a key part of each child's journey in their education supporting them to make the very best transition to the next stage of their learning. As a Governor I can support the children and their parents as they take their first steps with us until they leave on their last day knowing that they are ready for what the future holds.
