Physical Education Curriculum

Intent

Physical Education is a vibrant subject area within our school that supports social and emotional development across all year groups. Physical Education and its importance are deep rooted in our school on a competitive level and an individual developmental level.

At Harbour, we aim to introduce children to a wide range of sports to foster innate talent. Lessons cover a range of sports, we build in the importance of movement, teamwork and resilience. All children are taught our PE motto ‘Win Well, Lose Well.’

All children will develop their co-ordination, balance and agility as they progress in their primary years through sequenced planning. The learners will also learn about healthy lifestyles associated with both physical and mental health.

Implementation

At Harbour, we teach and encourage PE from the EYFS to Year 6. We are constantly adapting our PE planning by using a variety of quality resources and equipment- this helps us expose the children to different variations of the same skill, ensuring that they secure and embed their learning, no matter what their starting skill level is. Thus, showing progress.

Entitlement

  • Every child receives two PE lessons a week
  • Some children receive additional support through interventions during the lessons
  • Further opportunities are offered to all pupils to help them reach 60 minutes of physical activity each day e.g. active lessons (non-PE), active break times, active travel.
  • All children take part in competitive sport weekly and also take part in competitive tournaments.
  • As well as taking part in all other competitive tasks, SEND children take part in SEND tournaments
  • Well trained support staff ensure that children receive help at the appropriate time for their resilience
  • All children are entitled to focused teaching time from their teacher
  • Staff-led breaktime activities
  • After-school clubs
  • Intra-school competitions and Inter-school competitions

Expected Development

EYFS

Movements are still being learnt and developed and children tend to play alongside a friend rather than be isolated. Basic rules and behaviours are being learned and children show great enthusiasm to ‘have a go’ as experience has not yet taught them fear or danger awareness. There is a limited awareness of space and others.

Lessons and activities will concentrate on:

  • The development of manipulative and motor skills
  • Experience of spatial awareness, control and co-ordination
  • Playing games (parachute games and circle games)
  • Movement
  • The importance of caring about our bodies
  • Sharing, turn taking, choosing and making decisions

Key Stage 1 - Years 1 and 2

Children should now be developing movement skills, become increasingly confident and have a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.

They should be able to engage in competitive and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Master basic movements including: running, jumping, throwing and catching.
  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
  • Develop balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities, such as dance and gymnastics.

Key Stage 2 - Years 3 to 6

Basic movements have been learnt and children start to develop these into more recognisable skills. In Key Stage 2, children will further develop control in agility, balance and co-ordination. They will be more spatially aware during PE lessons.

In Upper Key Stage 2, children have more formed and clear movement. They begin to refine these skills with greater control. They also become more critical in their evaluations and can come up with their own solutions and approaches.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate and apply basic principles, suitable for attacking and defending
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and show improvement to achieve their personal best.

Impact

  • Our motto is to ‘Win Well, Lose Well’ We want all children to really understand this and for it to become part of their physical learning.
  • We would like our elite athletes to compete to a high standard in inter-competitions at a local level and regional level.
  • A high percentage of children to represent Harbour at some point in their primary years journey, that usually do not get a chance to do so, through targeted selection.
  • Children enjoy PE and healthy activities and will continue to stay active throughout their lives.
  • Cross curricular links ensure our children are active in other lessons.
  • Children understand the physical and mental benefits of being active and healthy.
  • Clear links to the community to ensure our children play for local sports clubs.
  • Children continue developing resilience, teamwork and the ability to lose and win, as part of our SEMH provision.
  • Children leave Harbour swimming 25M.
